Digital or bust.
Sony will discontinue first-party physical game discs starting January 2028, it has today announced.
Sony called the decision “a natural direction” in the face of “consumer preferences”, despite current backlash at Rockstar Games’ decision to sell “physical” versions of Grand Theft Auto 6 that are in reality a digital game code inside a physical box.
“Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Sony said in the larger statement.
“Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”
The announcement comes at the same time Sony revealed it would be shutting down its digital PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Store storefronts. It also follows another announcement by Sony that detailed the more than 500 movies that were removed from users’ accounts after a licensing deal had lapsed.
