Sony lays off most of Bungie’s Destiny team, some Marathon devs, and support staff

Termed "a reduction in force" by the studio and its owner.

Sony has today announced large-scale layoffs within Bungie’s Destiny and Marathon teams, alongside Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) support staff, following the final update of Destiny 2.

“With great sadness, we are announcing a reduction in force as we reorganize Bungie,” reads a post on Twitter.

“As the leaders of Bungie, past and present, we recognize Destiny 2 fell short of expectations these past several years,” it continued. “Following our final content update to Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in early incubation, we unfortunately could not continue operating at our previous size.”

SIE head Hermen Hulst confirmed that the layoffs would impact “most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members” alongside others at “SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations”.

After both statements thanked those laid off for their hard work, Hulst reaffirmed that “Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio”.
