Remedy transitions Vanguard from free-to-play to premium release

And Kestrel rises from the ashes.

Remedy will transition its Vanguard project from a free-to-play to a premium release, the developer has today declared. Moreover, it will be operating under the new codename of Kestrel.

Vanguard will still be published by Tencent, though Remedy has confirmed that “due to uncertainties in creating a successful game to the rapidly changing free-to-play market and associated risks”, they’ve both “discussed a new direction” for the title.

As a result of the change, some who were working on Vanguard will be shifted to other Remedy projects — and there are a bunch, including the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakeControl 2Alan Wake 2 DLC and Condor, a co-op multiplayer title set in the Control universe. A small group will remain to work on Kestrel‘s core.

“The project will return to a concept phase,” Remedy told investors. “The new experience will lean more into Remedy’s core strengths and be built on many of the features, assets and themes already designed for Vanguard.”

“We have made some great strides in free-to-play and multiplayer development in Vanguard,” said Remedy’s Tero Virtala.

“After a lot of careful consideration, we believe that taking on a new direction where the game will be built more around Remedy’s core competences is the right way to go,” Virtala continued. “We are creating another distinct Remedy game with Tencent’s continued support in making a great cooperative multiplayer experience.”

Remedy provided updates on a majority of its projects back at the start of this month.
