More Resident Evil remakes coming, says Capcom

Yes, please.

Hot off the success of the Resident Evil 4 remake, Capcom has declared that more Resident Evil remakes are on the way.

“We’ve released three remakes so far and they have all been received very well,” said Capcom’s Yasuhiro Anpo, speaking at a PlayStation partner awards event (via IGN Japan). “Since it allows a modern audience to play these games, it is something I am happy to do as someone that loves these older games, and we want to continue doing more.”

The remakes Anpo refers to are Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4, though Anpo has clearly forgotten that Capcom has also released the Resident Evil 1 remake back in the days of the Nintendo GameCube.

“What game we will remake in the future is something that we would like to announce in the future, so please look forward to it,” Anpo added.

While Capcom hasn’t named future titles, we’ve heard from a couple sources that a Resident Evil Code Veronica remake is indeed in production, news that will undoubtedly be well-received by franchise fans.

“We are very grateful to users that are vocal about their opinion,” Anpo said about those very fans and their feedback. “It allows us to develop with the player’s opinion in mind. For example, if this is how the players feel, then maybe we can make it like this. I think this is one of the reasons why our remakes are so well received.”

While we can attest to the high quality of each of the remakes, Resident Evil 3 is widely agreed to the be the weakest of the lot, boiling down to the sheer length (or lack thereof) of the title. I personally have a soft spot for Resident Evil 2 above the rest, though Resident Evil 4 is also a banger.

The traditions of survival horror have been modernised, resulting in something that’s all-too-familiar yet always manages to keep you on your toes,” I said in my 2019 Resident Evil 2 review. “The Raccoon City that you’ve always envisaged by filling in the blanks and making up for the failings of 32-bit graphics is now real.”

I called Resident Evil 3 “its own nemesis”, continuing on to deem it “a remake that’s enjoyable but seems a little shallow when compared to the innovations the RE3 that came before it brought to the table.”

“The Resident Evil 4 remake is a darker, more intense and faithful remake of one of the greatest games of all time, but plays it very safe,” Ben concluded in his 2023 review of the latest remake.

We’ll continue to keep you informed as more of new Resident Evil remakes becomes available. In the meantime, what REmakes would you like Capcom to produce? Sound off in the comments area, below.

The Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 remakes are all available on Windows PC via Steam, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5. All but Resident Evil 4 are also available on Xbox One.
