Microsoft is working on cloud streaming to bring console games to more devices

Microsoft is working on a cloud streaming service to enable “console quality gaming” on any device – mainly your phone or tablet, but could also be used for consoles, streaming boxes, smart TVs and PC.

Microsoft also confirmed its teams are currently working on hardware for the future of Xbox consoles, to enable you to play what you want, where you want – be in console, mobile or PC.

Phil Spencer didn’t specifically detail anything aside from that, but assured us Xbox engineers are working on more sophisticated artificial intelligence, and bigger and better things to come from Xbox, which is well and truly a multiplatform brand, rather than a single console.

Microsoft originally had big plans for cloud gaming on Xbox One, but back-pedalled when the messaging was misinterpreted and confused gamers at E3 2013.

PlayStation offers a North American streaming service called PlayStation Now that allows selected PS2, PS3 and PS4 games to be streamed, rather than downloaded, and originally played on several of devices, including PS3, PS4, PS Vita and some smart TVs – although many of those have since been discontinued, with the focus currently on PS4. PlayStation Now is not available in Australia.
