Discord layoffs impact 170 employees, says report

17% of the organisation's workforce has lost their jobs.

Discord layoffs will impact 170 employees, a report from The Verge today alleges.

According to the outlet, those at Discord were made aware of the layoffs in an email from CEO Jason Citron.

“Today we are making the unfortunate and difficult decision to reduce the size of Discord’s workforce by 17%,” Citron wrote in the email. “This means we are saying goodbye to 170 of our talented colleagues. This is a decision we did not take lightly, but it is one that we have conviction in to better serve our users, our business and our mission over the long term.”

In the same email, Citron said that Discord had to “sharpen our focus and improve the way we work together to bring more agility to our organisation”, and “face some hard truths” in doing so.

“While difficult, I am confident this will put us in the best position to continue building a strong and profitable business that delivers amazing products for our users and supports our mission for years to come,” Citron continued.

Discord employees impacted by the layoffs will receive five months’ salary plus an additional week for every full year at the company. Former staff will also have access to five months of benefits, three months of outplacement services, and access to mental health professionals for the remainder of 2024.

Layoffs have been announced at myriad developers and publishers over 2023 and 2024, including Unity, Twitch, Codemasters505 Games’ Digital BrosAmazonBungieMedia MoleculeUbisoft, Aussie studio League of GeeksVersus Evil, and many more.
