Bungie layoffs confirmed amidst reports of delays to Destiny 2 DLC and Marathon

Lots happening over at Bungie...

Bungie layoffs have been confirmed by the studio and come a little more than one year after being acquired by Sony. Moreover, the news comes amidst a report it will delay both its Destiny 2 Final Shape expansion alongside its Marathon reimagining.

First, Bungie has recently confirmed it has laid off staff following other layoffs at fellow PlayStation Studios organisations.

“Today is a sad day at Bungie as we say goodbye to colleagues who have all made a significant impact on our studio,” said CEO Pete Parsons. “What these exceptional individuals have contributed to our games and Bungie culture has been enormous and will continue to be a part of Bungie long into the future. These are truly talented people. If you have openings, I would highly recommend each and every one of them.”

Former employees who have confirmed they’ve lost their jobs include community manager Liana Ruppert, social media lead Griffin Bennett, associate franchise editor Jason Guisao and event manager Matthew Bianchi.

“Well… my heart is breaking for all affected,” wrote Ruppert. “I am now looking for opportunities. I have 21 years of games industry experience in media, production, and community management. I’m processing, I’m so heartbroken. I don’t know what to do from here… this was my home. I feel so lost.”

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who cites “people with knowledge of the matter”, Bungie will also push Destiny 2‘s The Final Shape expansion to June (formerly February), and Marathon into 2025.

Bungie was acquired by Sony back in July 2022 in a $3.6 million USD business arrangement.
