Switch does what Xbox One, PS4 and PC can’t — let you play a new game immediately.
After booting it up and blasting through the setup screen within a minute, I was already playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not a “ready to start” mode or watching a promotional video, actually playing the game. There is no installation time, and no downloading a hefty day one patch.
Of course, we knew all of this weeks ago, but I’d forgotten how nice it is to insert a game and start playing the entire thing straight away. Aside from retailer offers and resale value, Xbox One and PS4 don’t offer much incentive to pick a physical copy of a game over the digital version. Instantaneous play is certainly a positive for buying Switch game cards instead of from the eShop.
Switch does have a day one update you should download on March 3, but even that won’t halt your progress. It can download in the background, while you get stuck into Zelda.
