Xbox to block unauthorised third-party accessories

Is yours up to snuff?

Xbox has today confirmed it will block unauthorised third-party accessories from the Xbox family of consoles.

“Microsoft and other licensed Xbox hardware partners’ accessories are designed and manufactured with quality standards for performance, security, and safety,” a Microsoft representative told Eurogamer.

“Unauthorised accessories can compromise the gaming experience on Xbox consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.) Gamers may receive a pop-up warning that their accessory is unauthorised,” the rep continued. “Eventually, the unauthorised accessory will be blocked from use to preserve the console gaming experience.”

Microsoft’s confirmation comes after a report by Windows Central that stated Xbox players were beginning to see “error 0x82d60002” messages pertaining to unauthorised peripherals. The Xbox Support page says the error is in reference to a device that “was not manufactured by Microsoft or another licensed Xbox hardware partner”.

As per Eurogamer, peripheral manufacturer Brook Gaming acknowledged that some of its products fall into this category.

“We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause you,” Brook Gaming advised on social media. “The Brook engineering team is fully committed to developing a solution to maintain product quality and functionality.

“Please trust that we will spare no effort in identifying potential solutions,” it continued. “Once further updates become available, we will promptly notify you through our official community platforms.”
