Xbox game streaming box dropped over cost

Chromecast, this wasn't.

Xbox head Phil Spencer has said that the move to “pivot away” from a game streaming box was due to its cost.

“The console we built that now people have seen… was more expensive than we wanted it to be when we actually built it out with the hardware that we had inside,” Spencer told the Decoder podcast.

As Spencer noted, a prototype device was seen on his shelf as part of Fallout celebrations.

“A bunch of us took [the prototype] home and it worked…really, really well,” Spencer continued.

“[But] when you are building new products, it’s always about, do you have the right design? Do you have the right user interface? Do you have the right customer proposition? And the customer proposition includes the price, and I think all of us knew that we were a little out of position on price.”

Rather than a dedicated box, Microsoft has partnered with Samsung to offer an Xbox Cloud Streaming app inside its 2022 (and beyond) TV range.
