Tencent’s “AAA multiplayer” studio Team Kaiju reportedly shut down

Another one bites the dust.

Tencent’s big “AAA multiplayer” studio Team Kaiju has reportedly been shut down over this past weekend.

The report stems from a post on LinkedIn, reported penned by a former staffer at Team Kaiju, who stated, “Team Kaiju doesn’t appear to exist anymore. No announcement from Tencent. Most of the folks there were amazing. I wish them th best for the future.”

The Team Kaiju website currently serves a 404 page, while the Team Kaiju LinkedIn page now returns a “this LinkedIn Page isn’t available” error. Tencent, nor a representative from Team Kaiju, have made comment on the matter.

“Tencent allegedly shut down TEAM KAIJU, TiMi Studio Group’s North American subsidiary. Right after this, yesterday, Tencent filed for the trademark TEAM JADE in Europe,” reads a report from researcher and leaker Kurakasis.

“Team Kaiju was working on an AAA multiplayer game, and the studio was co-founded by former Halo 4 design director Scott Warner and Battlefield veteran Rosi Zagorcheva,” Kurakasis continued. “Warner left in April this year, and Zagorcheva in April 2022.”

“We are a new North American game development studio. We have offices in both LA and Seattle – and teammates in many other locations so we embrace fully-remote work. Why? Because what matters most is the creative, and we’ve seen enough to believe that an unorthodox approach is often the best path forward,” reads a cached version of the Team Kaiju website.

“There are still so many player fantasies to explore in worlds unseen. Video games are the preeminent creative medium of the 21st Century; there are no limits to the kind of experiences we can make and the places we can go. So let’s go there together.”

This reported shut down is the latest in a string of closures and layoffs that have impacted the video game development space. Layoffs have impacted developers and publishers including Aussie studio League of Geeks alongside Codemasters, Tinybuild505 Games’ Digital BrosAmazonBungieMedia MoleculeUbisoft and many more
