Sony “not making any profit” from Overwatch Pink Mercy skin sales

Sony has said it is “not making any profit from sales of the Overwatch Pink Mercy Skin” after a questionable statement posted on the European PlayStation Store.

The question has come up after a tweet suggested Sony is covering server costs to host the skin (or similar) rather than donate all proceeds to breast cancer research.

“Pretty disgraceful from Sony. Taking a 22% cut from each purchase of Overwatch’s Mercy Breast Cancer Research charity skin,” Nick Akerman tweeted alongside a picture from Sony’s store that suggested only £10.12 GBP of a £12.99 GBP sale would go to charity. “100% goes to charity on Xbox and PC. Games media needs to report this.”

The wording on each store is what is causing reason for concern.

“Blizzard Entertainment will donate 100% of the proceeds that it receives from Sony PlayStation,” can be found on the PlayStation Store, compared to “Blizzard Entertainment will donate 100% of the purchase price for your purchase of the Pink Mercy skin on Xbox,” on the Microsoft Store.

Sony representatives were ambiguous when asked what was happening.

“We are not making any profit from sales of the Overwatch Pink Mercy Skin,” a representative of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe told VG24/7. Sony did not respond to Stevivor’s request for comment at the time of publishing.

Sony’s response makes it unclear if it is taking a cut of proceeds to cover server costs. We’ve asked Sony to clarify.

“We aren’t able to go into detail on matters regarding third-party distribution,” a Blizzard representative told Stevivor when asked. “However, we can confirm that Blizzard Entertainment will not profit from any of the sales of the Pink Mercy skin.”

Overwatch is available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4. The Pink Mercy skin is available until 22 May.
