Sega won’t do NFTs if it’s a matter of “simple money-making”

Yes, please.

Sega has discussed its approach to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), saying it won’t use the functionality in its titles if it would be “perceived as simple money-making”.

Sega CEO Karuki Satomi talked NFTs in a recent management meeting (as found by Tweaktown).

“In terms of NFT, we would like to try out various experiments and we have already started many different studies and considerations but nothing is decided at this point regarding P2E.

“We need to carefully assess many things such as how we can mitigate the negative elements, how much we can introduce this within the Japanese regulation, what will be accepted and what will not be by the users,” he said.

“Then, we will consider this further if this leads to our mission ‘Constantly Creating, Forever Captivating,’ but if it is perceived as simple money-making, I would like to make a decision not to proceed.”

NFTs in video games isn’t new — tokens were to be introduced inside Stalker 2 before player backlash caused them to be pulled. Ubisoft has created a platform called Quartz that’s all about NFTs, and Konami has recently introduced a series of NFTs to celebrate Castlevania‘s 35th anniversary.
