Rogue One writer Gary Whitta leading Project Athia writing team

Rogue One writer (and Animal Talking interviewer) Gary Whitta has confirmed he is leading a group of writers that are creating the world of Square Enix’s newly announced Project Athia.

“Really proud to reveal that I led a crack team of A-list writers from the worlds of film, tv, games, and fantasy literature who helped create this immense new universe for Square Enix,” Whitta confirmed on Twitter.

He also stated that he “can’t wait for you to see and learn more,” and to “stay tuned.”

Whitta has expressed interest in writing movie scripts for both Star Fox and Control and has called EA’s handling of the Star Wars franchise “an embarrassment”. Hopefully Whitta will feel differently about that latter statement after EA Motive drops details of its first proper title, Star Wars Squadrons.

Project Athia seems a ways away — the game’s name is a working title, for starters, and we didn’t really get a chance to see much of it at Sony’s PS5 Future of Gaming livestream last week. Nonetheless, it’s certainly one to be excited for.
