Phil Spencer: Sony is buying its exclusive third-party content

In an interview with Gamespot recently, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said that despite what fans may think, Sony’s market share with the PS4 is not the reason for exclusive third-party content.

“So, they [Sony] don’t ‘gobble’ the deals up. They buy them,” he said, when asked if it was more difficult for Xbox One to acquire third-party content given its much smaller market share outside the US.

Spencer said that as someone who follows the gaming media he’s across the perceptions of fans and the media, but knows they aren’t always accurate. “You know, I read the same things you do, and I know some people think it’s somehow less expensive to sign third-party exclusives if you have a bigger market-share. I can tell you, it has nothing to do with market share.”

Spencer later said in the same interview that Xbox has made “a conscious decision to focus on our first-party games. It doesn’t make it harder or easier, it’s just a decision. I do think that building up first-party exclusives is creatively more difficult than signing a deal, just by the nature of what it is.”

Spencer also admitted that he was a fan of Uncharted. Aren’t we all Phil?

What do you think of Microsoft and Sony’s third-party support.
