Overwatch 2 director regrets “out of context” self-heal revelation

Aaron Keller says it's "part of a much bigger set [of changes]."

Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller has taken to social media to regret speaking of highly controversial self-heal functionality “out of context”.

If you missed the news yesterday, Tank and Damage characters will soon possess a passive healing ability that will take some of the pressure off Healers in an effort to promote teamplay.

Taking to social media, Keller wrote, “[c]larifying a few things with the self-heal. It’s one part of a much larger set of changes coming to the game in [season nine later this year].

“Internally we’re talking about, and targeting some of these changes at damage spikiness in game, the role of DPS in securing kills, and the strength of healing,” he continued.

Keller then insisted the recent reveal was “out of context” and should have been handled in a different manner.

“It was a mistake to talk about this lone change out of context,” he said, “since it’s a part of a much bigger set coming to [season 9]. Sorry for that, and I look forward to more discussion around balance changes when we drop more details.”

As we reported yesterday, many players reacted to the news unfavourably, largely saying it would nerf Healers like Mercy, Lucio, Baptiste, Ana and Kiriko — some of whom need refreshes themselves.

Overwatch 2 is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5 and Switch.
