Nintendo doesn’t think cloud gaming will catch on anytime soon

Nintendo doesn’t think cloud-based gaming will become a major fixture in homes within the next ten years, an interview with Nikkei has revealed.

Speaking with the publication (translated by Nintendo Everything), Nintendo’s global president, Shuntaro Furukawa, said the company will instead focus on dedicated hardware like the Nintendo Switch.

“It’s possible that cloud gaming could capture the public’s interest in 10 years from now, however at this point in time, I do not think that dedicated hardware will go away,” he said. “It’s a long way off before we’ll really know the outcome.”

Furukawa admitted that Nintendo’s focus won’t be exclusively on specialised hardware.

“It would be pointless to solely focus on methods of play that can only be had on dedicated hardware,” he continued. “Once your audience starts saying they can play on other consoles or smartphones instead, you’re finished.”

What do you make of Nintendo’s stance? With Microsoft preparing to release Project xCloud and Sony offering its PlayStation Now service, is Nintendo lagging behind?
