Next-gen Xbox: President aims for “biggest technological leap in a generation”

Sarah Bond is shooting for the stars... at the same time Xbox head Phil Spencer says that will be difficult.

Xbox president Sarah Bond has sent an internal email to employees saying the company will focus on “delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation” with the next generation of Xbox hardware. At the same time, Xbox head Phil Spencer has said that will be difficult thanks to Moore’s Law.

“It’s been nearly six months since we came together as an organization,” Bond wrote in an email to employees, as sourced by Windows Central. “Our collective achievements in that timeframe are tremendous. Everyone should feel incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the opportunities ahead.

“We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation.”

Despite Bond’s claim, Xbox head Phil Spencer has told Polygon of the difficulties facing the console space, as hardware is already seen as a loss leader… and expected to get worse. That’s before trying to factor in technological leaps.

“Moore’s Law has slowed down,” Spencer said. “The price of the components of a console aren’t coming down as fast as they have in previous generations.”

For those unfamiliar, Moore’s Law is an observation that states that the number of transisitors in an integrated circuit doubles once every two years.

Similarly, rumours of a PS5 Pro have been met with confusion by experts, who state that developers aren’t taking full advantage of the technology found inside current-gen consoles.

“Developers didn’t seem to feel they needed [a mid-cycle refresh like the PS5 Pro,” GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring said after attending last month’s GDC. “They weren’t really making the most of the PS5 in the first place.”

“This generation doesn’t even seem to have got started, let alone needs a mid-generation upgrade,” Dring added.

Bond’s email follows Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard and 1,900 subsequent layoffs.
