Hellblade 2 framerate locked at 30FPS on Xbox Series consoles

The framerate lock will make the game more "cinematic", says Ninja Theory.

Senua’s Saga Hellblade 2 will be locked to 30 frames-per-second (FPS) on Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X consoles, Ninja Theory has today confirmed.

Speaking with GamePro, VFX director Mark Slater-Tunstill made the confirmation, saying the framerate lock will make the title more “cinematic”.

“There are no graphics modes; the frame rate can only be increased on the PC,” reads a German-to-English translation of a larger preview done by the outlet. “The VFX director explains this in an interview with GamePro by saying that the experience should feel more “cinematic” – similar to movies that run at 24 frames per second.”

Despite the framerate lock, the preview continued to say that, “[s]ince the gameplay is generally rather slow and weighty, the smooth 30 fps didn’t bother me during the playback session, at least.”

The first-party Hellblade 2 follows another Microsoft first-party current-gen game, Redfall, in launching with a 30FPS cap. In the case of Redfall, the title was later patched to support 60FPS on console.

Hellblade 2 will also be available as a digital-only purchase.

Expect Senua’s Saga Hellblade 2 on Windows PC via Steam the Microsoft Store alongside Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X from 21 May 2024. The title will also be part of Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
