Microsoft’s Groove Music terminated, Spotify is now the go-to

Microsoft’s Groove Music has been terminated, with the publishing giant now allying with Spotify instead.

The writing was on the wall back in August, when a Spotify music app was offered on Xbox One. Groove Music itself was rebranded from Xbox Music two years ago. Xbox Music could been seen as a distant cousin of Microsoft’s failed Zune branding and service.

Groove Music will be discontinued on 31 December 2017, and those with active subscriptions will receive a pro-rata discount from then. Grooves passes will no longer be sold by Microsoft from today onward.

To its credit, Microsoft is providing extra support to help Groove users transition their playlists into Spotify. An update to Groove on Windows 10 next week will provide the tools to do so.

What do you think of Microsoft’s decision to terminate its first-party music streaming service?
