The Last of Us feature film adaptation being developed

The Last of Us is the latest game to receive the Hollywood treatment with a live-action feature film in development, Deadline reports. The film is being developed by Sam Raimi’s (Evil Dead, Spider-Man Trilogy) production company Ghost House Pictures from a script by the game’s writer Neil Druckmann. Naughty Dog co-founders Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra and game Director Bruce Straley will also have a creative hand in the film’s development. Sony Pictures subsidiary Screen Gem will distribute the film.

Evan Wells described the parntership between Naughty Dog, Screen Gems and Ghost house as “a perfect fit.” “Since our game released last June, we’ve talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn’t have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards,” Wells added.

Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper said he believed the audience for The Last of Us was “far greater than just the gaming community” and that for the project to succeed “Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay.” He added, “I am thrilled that SCEA’s Riley Russell was able to get me in front of Neil and Evan Wells to plead my case. Sam and his team at Ghost House round out the perfect team to help realize Neil’s vision.”

There’s no word on when we can expect to see The Last of Us in theatres at this stage.
