Disney Interactive lays off a quarter of its workforce through restructure

Disney Interactive confirmed that it had laid off approximately one quarter of its workforce today, Polygon reports. Around 700 staff have lost their jobs in what a Disney spokesperson called “an effort to focus the division on a streamlined suite of high quality digital products.”

The New York Times is reporting that the division most effected by the restructure is Playdom. Acquired by Disney Interactive in 2010, Playdom’s primary focus has been on free-to-play online titles including Disney City Girl and Marvel Avengers Alliance.

President of Disney Interactive James A. Pitaro told the Times that Disney Interactive is not “exiting any businesses”, but is instead focusing on mobile and core development opportunities. “[T]his is a doubling down on mobile and an effort to focus much more intently on a core set of priorities,” he said, “At the same time we are reducing our focus in some areas, we are making strategic investments in others.”

Disney Interactive publishes a range of content with the most successful being last year’s Disney Infinity which has turned the fortunes of the publisher around in the past two financial quarters.
