“Improvements to Xbox Achievements” teased by Xbox head Phil Spencer

Are we getting a Platinum equivalent?

“Improvements to Xbox Achievements” have been teased by Xbox head Phil Spencer, causing many to hope for a PlayStation-style Achievement that would be equivalent to a Platinum Trophy.

“There’s a roadmap of those things coming as well,” Spencer said to Windows Central. “There’s a hardware roadmap, there’s a service roadmap, maybe there’s even a roadmap for improvements to Xbox Achievements, which I know is something that you and many others care about.”

Achievements haven’t changed too much since their introduction back on Xbox 360. In November 2021, Microsoft’s Jason Ronald said Achievements were “top of mind” to the company; in May of this year, Microsoft tightened its belt when it came to the earnables in an attempt to prevent publishers from releasing titles that practically instantly unlocked 1,000 Gamerscore.

The biggest bugbear with Achievement Hunters at present is likely DLC; those who’ve earned a full 1,000 Gamerscore in a title’s base game will lose their 100% Achievement rating in a title that adds DLC and additional Achievements down the track. Sony’s Platinum Trophy combats this problem, leaving a player with a bonafide mark of their work.

We released an article back in 2016 titled ‘Embracing your inner Xbox Achievement addict’ that has a ton of interesting information when it comes to Achievements.
