Fallout 4 gets free current-gen update (that breaks London mod)

We've got good news... and bad news.

Hot on the heels of the Fallout TV series on Prime Video, Bethesda has announced that Fallout 4 will receive a free current-gen update on PS5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. The trouble is, the update essentially breaks the upcoming Fallout London fan-made mod.

“This free update includes native applications for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes. Experience up to 60 FPS and increased resolutions,” Bethesda said of the update, adding that “Fallout 4 players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will also receive a free update with stability improvements, login and quest fixes.”

The update, expected on 25 April, will also bring with it new content in the form of Creation Club items that revolve around the Enclave.

“Enclave Remnants brings the Pre-War cabal, The Enclave, into the Fallout 4 storyline,” Bethesda said. “In this new quest, ‘Echoes of the Past,’ can you stop The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth?”

The problem is, the current-gen update seems to gravely impact a highly anticipated fan mod called Fallout London.

The mod, which was slated for 23 April, “impact[s] us and will cause complications for our release,” said Dean Carter of Team Folon, the community team working on Fallout London

“The past four years of [Team Folon’s] work stands to simply break,” Carter continued.

As such, Fallout London will be delayed indefinitely.

“On the technical front, being able to play Fallout London with the new potential engine improvements and the performance upgrades is fantastic,” Carter added. “It’s going to mean that we can push the engine even harder than we’ve already pushed it, so we’re gonna get these great quality-of-life improvements in the mod.

“It’s simply not just the case of blocking the updates and hoping for the best because if you don’t do it properly, it’ll also break, and we can’t just ask you to drag things back in time – that’s just not on the cards,” he continued.

“We want this as close as a real game release as we can and offer all of you the best experience that you can get for everyone, but it’s just looking like this update will mean that that will take some time.”

We’ll keep you informed as we learn more about the fate of Fallout London.

Fallout 4, meanwhile, is available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5. We reviewed it way back in 2015, calling it “one of gaming’s ultimate triumphs”.

The first season of the Fallout 4 TV series — all eight episodes — are available in full on Prime Video. A second season has already been greenlit.
