Eidos-Montreal lays off nearly 100 as Deus Ex game is cancelled

Yep, more layoffs.

Eidos-Montreal has laid off close to 100 staff at the same time it’s been announced that a new game in the Deus Ex franchise has been cancelled.

“The global economic context, the challenges of our industry and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer have finally impacted our studio,” the studio said on Twitter, following a report from Bloomberg. “The difficult decision has been made to let go 97 people from development teams, administration, and support services.”

Eidos-Montreal did not comment on Bloomberg’s report that a Deus Ex game has been in the works at the studio for the last two years, nor that it had been cancelled. The last proper Deus Ex game, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, was published back in 2016.

More than an estimated 12,000 layoffs have rocked the gaming industry over the last year and a half; around 6,000 have come in January 2024 alone.

Impacted developers and publishers include Riot GamesThunderfulEmbracer and GearboxTwitch (again)UnityCodemasters505 Games’ Digital BrosAmazonBungieMedia MoleculeUbisoft, Aussie studio League of GeeksVersus Evil and many more.
