Buy a game at full price if you want its sequel, says Days Gone dev

And certainly don't claim it via PlayStation Plus...

Days Gone developer John Garvin has said players should buy a game at full price if they want to see its sequel, comments made in the wake of allegations Days Gone 2 was pitched by Sony Bend and turned down by Sony itself.

“I do have an opinion on something that your audience may find of interest, and it might piss some of them off,” Garvin, a writer and Creative Director on Days Gone, told David Gaffe on his podcast. “If you love a game, buy it at fucking full price. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen gamers say ‘yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever’.

“I’m just saying, you don’t [know if you like a game until you’ve played it], but don’t complain if a game doesn’t get a sequel if it wasn’t supported at launch.

“It’s like, God of War got whatever number millions of sales at launch and, you know, Days Gone didn’t. I’m just speaking for me personally as a developer, I don’t work for Sony, I don’t know what the numbers are.”

Fellow developer Jeff Ross also featured on Gaffe’s podcast, implying that Days Gone 2 had been pitched to Sony, but turned down.

Days Gone has sold more copies than every game the studio has ever made combined,” Ross told Gaffe (via Bloomberg). “So it’s successful in that way, and the community and player response. But the critics… yeah, that was Normandy Beach.”

We’re amongst the critics Ross mentioned, saying Days Gone “practically goes out of its way to hamper enjoyment,” in our review.

“Unoriginal yet decent systems are continually hampered by a lack of polish quite uncommon in Sony first-party titles,” we continued.

Days Gone is currently available on PS4 and PS5 and will head to Windows PC on 19 May. It’s also one of the free titles available through Sony’s PlayStation Plus program over the month of April… but if you grab it there, maybe don’t tell that to Garvin.
