Bethesda talks Starfield: “Skyrim in space” with help from Elon Musk

No, really.

Bethesda Game Studios has been talking Starfield since its announcement of the game’s 11 November 2022 release date.

First, Managing Director Ashley Cheng told The Washington Post that Starfield “is the Han Solo simulator. Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff.”

Speaking to the same outlet alongside The Telegraph, Bethesda’s Todd Howard called the game “Skyrim in space” and “NASA meets Indiana Jones meets the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”.

“It’s kind of like Skyrim in terms of the structure of the game, where you’re going to be who you want to be, and then there’s different factions that you can join, and really carve your own path,” Howard said.

“We struggled at first at finding Starfield’s identity,” he continued. “We knew the style of game we wanted. But there’s so much science fiction, we didn’t have this existing franchise feel. We had to create that from scratch. What do the spaceships look like? What’s the tech level? What do people believe? What year is it really set in?”

Finally, Howard confirmed that Bethesda has received assistance from Elon Musk’s Space X organisation as part of its attempt to continue to establish Starfield‘s own footprint. Howard said Space X helped him “to talk to people who could see further than what I was seeing right now.”

Starfield heads to PC, Xbox Series S & X and Xbox Cloud Gaming on 11 November 2022. It was also confirmed for Xbox Game Pass at launch.
