Xbox One X 4K downloads guide: How to get updates now

The release date of the Xbox One X is fast approaching, and Microsoft has now made it possible to start grabbing 4K downloads on your current console ahead of time.

Select titles that support will support true 4K are readying themselves ahead of time, giving you the opportunity to spread out downloads between now and November 7. Here’s how to take advantage, downloading the updates to your Xbox One or Xbox One S so you can then pass them onto your Xbox One X.

Turn on auto-updates

First, you’ll need to make sure your games are able to auto-update themselves on your Xbox One or Xbox One S. To do so:

  • Go to the Xbox Guide by pressing the Xbox button on your controller.
  • Head right to the Settings menu and press A.
  • Go to System > Updates.
  • Tick the box that reads Keep my games & apps up to date.

Enable 4K downloads

  1. Go to the Xbox Guide by pressing the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Head right to the Settings menu and press A.
  3. Go to System > Backup & Transfer.
  4. Tick the box that reads Download 4K game content.

Transferring content

When the Xbox One X is available, you’ll have two options to transfer the 4K content to it alongside any games you currently own:

  1. The easiest: Unplug your external hard drive from your Xbox One or Xbox One X and plug it into the Xbox One X.
  2. Slightly harder: Use your home network to transfer the files from your Xbox One or Xbox One S to your Xbox One X. Both consoles will need to be connected to your network during this process, which will prompt to be used during initial setup.

There you have it!

The Xbox One X heads to stores on 7 November.
