NHL 23 cross-play confirmed, but there’s a catch…

Rest easy, though: most of the features we want are included at launch!

NHL 23 cross-play has been confirmed by EA Vancouver, though it somes with a small catch or two. We explain what you can expect below.

First, cross-play will be limited to console generation. That means those on Xbox One and PS4 can play against each other, and those on Xbox Series S & X can play against those on PS5.

The keyword up there is “against”. In a session with press and influencers, EA Vancouver clarified that cross-play at launch will limit play against — and not with — different console platforms. Those on Xbox One can play with and against others on Xbox One, but can only play against those on PS4. The same, of course, is true for current-gen. That also means that players across platforms will not be able to join a singular EASHL hockey club, as a prime example.

That caveat aside, cross-play will be enabled for all HUT activities alongside World of Chel modes including EASHL, Threes and Ones.

Cross-platform matchmaking has been a highly requested feature from the NHL franchise and finally, with NHL 23, that request will become a reality,” affirmed Creative Director Mike Inglehart.

“Players from Sony and Microsoft will finally be able to compete against each other, increasing the overall player pool size, resulting in smaller matchmaking times and better matchmaking quality,” Inglehart continued.

Cross-platform clubs and mixed-platform club matchmaking are being looked at and will hopefully be introduced in future titles, EA Vancouver also confirmed.

As we look towards the future, expanding our social play feature set to include the ability to create and or join a mix club along with mixed club matchmaking are both incredibly important priorities for this effort,” Inglehart said.

NHL 23 heads to Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S, PS4 and PS5 on 14 October.
