Review: The Jak and Daxter Trilogy

Naughty Dog has released some amazing gems for this generation of consoles. The success of Uncharted has resulted in it becoming a flagship title for the Sony’s PlayStation 3. But before their next big release, Last of Us, Naughty Dog in partnership with Mass Media is giving us the chance to turn back the clock and relive one of its finest series in high definition.

Jak & Daxter was an incredible series during it’s time on the PlayStation2 and it’s been ten years since its release and to celebrate this all three titles, Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II: Renegade and Jak 3 have been placed on one neatly packaged and affordable blu-ray.

The Jak & Daxter Trilogy for the most part has been come over to the PlayStation 3 extremely well and is a terrific example of a HD collection done right. Graphically, the games are sharper without sacrificing their atmosphere. Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is visually the weakest of the three titles. Its textures, though filtered, aren’t quite as sharp as its sequels. That said, its environments are the most diverse and colourful in the series. It’s one of the reason The Precursor Legacy is my favourite of the trilogy. The later titles show off how well a PlayStation 2 title can be brought into the current generation for new players to experience. In some places, the graphical style could even give this generation’s games a run for their money. Something new for the series though is 3D support for all three titles.

Audio design is as incredible as it was during its first release showing how the voice acting was years ahead of its time in the gaming industry and the musical soundtrack is equally as enjoyable.

Unfortunately there aren’t any new extras beyond Trophy support for long-time fans, but all of the original unlockable extras for each title are still there to tide players over ranging from unlimited ammunition to behind the scenes with commentaries.

The Jak & Daxter Trilogy is a title that should be in everyone’s gaming collection regardless of whether you own the original titles or not. New players are going to get the most out of this disc but this is a rare instance where a title — or in this case three — are worth a second purchase.

Jak & Daxter Trilogy is available now for PlayStation 3.
