Xbox Series X external storage system uses proprietary SSD cards

Xbox Series X external storage was detailed at length by Digital Foundry today, and we’ve got the recap for you here.

First, the Xbox Series X will come with a 1TB internal SSD for games, and as we all know, that’ll get very full, very fast. To combat that, Microsoft has partnered with Seagate to develope a proprietary SSD card that will slot into that one (once mystery) port on the console.

According to Microsoft, the proprietary SSD cards ensure for thermal dissipation and a steady, 2.4GB/s stream of data to the Xbox Series X, meaning the data transfer will be fast and reliable — something that developers can count on when creating a new title.

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman took to Resetera to confirm that older, USB external drives will still be compatible with the Xbox Series X. The drives will be able to store — but importantly, not play — Xbox Series X era titles; you’ll have to transfer the data back to an SSD before playing. Older external drives can be used to store and play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox backwards compatible titles.

Stay tuned for more on Xbox Series X. The next-gen console will hit store shelves this coming holiday season.
