Xbox reportedly plans more layoffs as it details “reset” to staff, players

An email to staff doesn't mention the reported upcoming wave of layoffs.

Xbox has detailed plans of a “reset” to both staff and consumers at the same time of a report that it will soon trigger another wave of layoffs at the company.

“[Results from the Xbox Games Showcase and FanFest] are early, but they demonstrate what is possible when we move faster, stay close to our community, and align behind a shared vision,” Xbox heads Asha Sharma and Matt Booty wrote to staff, now published for the world on the Xbox Wire blog. “We have made mistakes, and will continue to make them, but what matters is that we listen, learn, and adjust the course where needed. Remember, our fans are rooting for us.”

The memo continues on to detail five key pillars of the reset, including how to address competition, production costs, hardware component shortages and pricing, the need for first-party games, and platform infrastructure.

At the same time as the memo, which does not detail the need for layoffs, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reports that the company is “planning major layoffs next month,” according to sources familiar with the matter.

The report continues to state that Xbox is also planning to cut marketing spend alongside the layoffs.

Microsoft declined to comment on Bloomberg’s story.
