Winner of 20th anniversary PS4 auction backs out of payment

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of PlayStation, Sony created 12,300 very special grey PlayStation 4 consoles, designed to echo the original PlayStation.

With only 12,300 of them worldwide, demand was — as you would expect — quite high. Stevivor were lucky enough to receive one and can attest to just how stunning and gorgeous it is. While we received number 228 of 12,300, Sony saved number 00001 especially for a charity auction in Japan.

The winning bidder bid ¥15,135,000 (around $129,000 USD), but for reasons unknown has pulled out and refuses to pay, Famitsu reports. Sony promised to match the winning bid and essentially double the donated amount and will do so as planned, but the console will remain with the company.

The recipient of the proceeds from the auction is The Children Japan, who will now receive only Sony’s donation. The Yahoo! Auction page for the console lists a total of 1,585 bids starting at ¥1.

How much would you pay for one of these special PS4s?
