Victoria gets $5.25 million games industry funding package

VicScreen has pulled out its wallet.

The Victorian games industry will receive a $5.25 million funding package, the Victorian Government has recently declared.

By way of Kotaku (thanks Ruby!), Victoria’s Minister for Creative Industries, Steve Dimopoulos, made the announcement during this past weekend’s PAX AUS.

“Digital games are serious business in Victoria and one of the world’s fastest growing creative industries,” said Dimopoulos. “This latest package continues our investment in the global success of our games sector and in local jobs.”

The package is basically separated into three initiatives, with the first coming as a $2 million AUD boost that will expand the Melbourne International Games Week over 2023 and 2024.

Following that, a futher $2.5 million AUD investment from the Victorian Government will target the creation of development services and workspaces within Melbourne’s CBD.

Finally, a new VicScreen funding initiative will offer up grants of up to $50,000 AUD towards “the development of new ideas” and mentoring opportunities. The funding will be capped at $750,000 AUD in total.

What do you make of Victoria’s latest initiative to keep it as the game development state of Australia?
