Ubisoft’s latest free-to-play shooter is in open beta

Get hype for XDefiant?

Ubisoft’s latest free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, is now in open beta on PC and consoles.

The closed beta will feature 14 maps, four factions, 24 weapons, 44 attachments and 5 explosive devices and runs from today to 24 April.

The offering, however, won’t let you carry player progression into the full game when it’s eventually released.

If you’re unfamiliar with XDefiant, the hero shooter was first announced as Tom Clancy’s XDefiant before dropping the Tom Clancy‘s bit. It revolves around factions that largely come from the Tom Clancy‘s universe, including Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy’s The Division.

Previews for the shooter dropped today, and most haven’t been overly kind. VG24/7 described XDefiant as “a perfectly serviceable hero shooter that does nothing to alleviate FPS fatigue”, while Polygon said its “factions look neat, but… rarely stand out in the gameplay.”

Free’s free, though, so jump in and take a look for yourself if interested.

XDefiant is planned for release on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5.
