There’s a bit of Silent Hill in Kojima’s first OD trailer

Ooooh!

People far more clever than I have spotted a bit of Silent Hill hidden in plain sight within the first trailer for Hideo Kojima’s newly announced OD.

As spotted by Central Xbox, the tease is found within German actor Udo Kier’s portion of the trailer. If you’ve seen it, you know the trailer is full of actors screaming, and at one point, Japanese kanji appears inside Kier’s mouth.

Now — and stay with me, here — is the interesting part. At one point, kanji for Atami appears. Atami is in the prefecture of Shizuoka. That prefecture, spelled out in kanji is 静岡. Separating those two characters gives you , which means “silent”, and , which means “hill”.

Some suspect that OD itself is a nod to Silent Hill, or more accurately, Kojima’s playable teaser for the larger work, one that he named PT. Seeing all the connections, yet?

Silent Hills was announced back in 2014 before being cancelled a year later as part of a falling out between Kojima and Konami.

OD was revealed last week at the Game Awards 2023; it will be a collaboration between Kojima and Get Out‘s Jordan Peele, starring Kier, Sophia Lillis (It) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria). Check out the teaser trailer in question above.
