Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida “hates” annualised franchises

Speaking at the 2015 DICE Summit, SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida delivered the very quotable line that he ‘hates’ annualised franchises.

While there is a lot more to his quote than that, it is a bold statement on the status quo of game publishing in 2015. Yoshida blames marketing executives and their lack of understanding of the development process. They see the success of big annualised franchises like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed, but don’t understand the work it takes and the vast resources required to produce games of that scope and quality year in, year out.

Yoshida pointed out that in the past sequels were considered a risk, rarely more successful than their predecessors, but the market has shifted where the familiarity and quality of gameplay in annualised franchises drives sales more than risk taking.

Yoshida talked about a lot more than just the franchise business, including some interesting notes on Sony Computer Entertainment’s history. You can find the full panel at IGN.
