Sony’s results for Q4 2014 are in, PS4 sales top 6.4 million worldwide

Sony has announced their final quarter 2014 financial results, with the headline number being 6.4 million PS4 consoles sold in the period 1 October through 31 December.

Sony sold 7.5 million consoles total during that period. For comparison, Microsoft announced two weeks ago they shipped 6.6 million systems in the same timeframe.

Worldwide PS4 sales now top 18 million, giving it a comfortable lead over the Xbox One (unconfirmed at around 11 million) and Wii U (around 10 million with a year’s head start) for this generation. It is hardly insurmountable, but gamers have spoken in the first year of the next generation and they prefer Sony’s ‘games first’ policy to the ‘media box’ label Microsoft spent the better part of 2014 trying to shake off.

You can find the full financial report here, though it is rather dry. Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox One midway through that quarter, so the Q1 2015 results will be the first time we get an idea of how the Kinect free Xbox One and aggressive bundling have impacted this battle.
