Sony’s Backbone competitor is priced at $200 USD

We're awaiting Australian pricing of the PlayStation Portal.

PlayStation Portal is the name of Sony’s wifi-enabled streaming device, and is priced at $200 USD — or twice as much as its competitor, the Backbone for PlayStation.

“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house,” Sony said, offering up the best use case for the device.

The handheld connects to your PS5 using wifi, and doesn’t support PlayStation Plus streaming (not that we have that in Australia), nor PSVR 2.

Pre-orders are not yet available, nor is Australian pricing.

As we’ve stated in the past, the features of the PlayStation Portal (previously known as Project Q) mirror those of a Backbone connected to your own phone… so we’d suggest saving some money and going with that instead.

You can grab the Backbone PlayStation Edition for iPhone here for $99.99 USD, or the Backbone PlayStation Edition for Android for the same price.

We’ll update this story as Aussie details are made available.
