Sony looking into adding Trophies to older, emulated PlayStation games

PSone and PS2 Trophies, anyone?

Sony has filed a patent that suggests it is looking to add Trophies into older, emulated games.

While nothing’s confirmed of course, this means that older PSone and PS2 games could eventually offer up a coveted Platinum Trophies to those who play via backwards compatibility.

“Generally, trophies are an important part of modem gaming,” Sony said in the patent, filed 18 March 2021 (as discovered by Bartman013 on Reddit). “However, often, older games do not have the capability to award trophies to player. In order to enhance the gaming experience, it would be desirable to be able to award trophies to users playing older games that were not introduced with the trophy feature.”

Sony has filed similar patents in the past, though they looked to add Trophies to disc-based versions of PlayStation games. They didn’t eventuate, so this patent could go the same route.
