Sony isn’t working on a handheld that competes with the Nintendo Switch

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Andrew House has confirmed the company isn’t working on competitor to the Nintendo Switch. Nor a successor to the PlayStation Vita, for that matter.

“We have not seen [handheld gaming outside of Japan and Asia] as being a huge market opportunity,” House told Bloomberg. “The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand. The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor.”

House had kind words for Nintendo’s new home-handheld hybrid device.

“The Nintendo device is a hybrid device and that’s a different approach and strategy,” he said. “The folks at Nintendo have their strategy and that’s great.”

Despite this, House asserted the Switch hasn’t put a dent in the sales of the PS4. In fact, House suggested the Switch has bolstered Sony’s numbers.

“That draws me to the conclusion that they’ve really been additive to the business in the last year or so,” House said.

Do you wish Sony had a handheld offering on the market? Why or why not?
