SOE’s G.I.R.L. program begins next month

Sony Online Entertainment – SOE – is gearing up for its yearly G.I.R.L. program which encourages women across America to enter the games industry by offering a $10,000 USD scholarship towards college and a 10-week paid internship with a developer.

The competition began in 2008 and has since seen previous winners move into careers within the games industry in both development and artistic roles.  Winner Julia Brasil now works as an environmental artist at Secret Identity Studios – developers of upcoming MMO Marvel Heroes – while 2010’s winner Sylvia Liu has moved beyond the world of games development and is now a background artist for animated series Transformers Prime.

“Over the years we’ve watched the games industry evolve, and now people are gaming from every walk of life because of mobile devices and the different platforms,” said Laura Naviaux, SOE senior VP of global sales and marketing in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. She continues, “The genres are evolving and now there’s a game for everybody. So it’s imperative that we have people on the development teams that are women, because you can’t have 18-34 year old men making games for every type of demographic.”

Applications can be submitted from next month and is open to women in the United States over 18 years of age who are currently studying in an undergraduate program related to gaming. For more information make sure to follow the official Twitter account.
