Rumours that the PlayStation 5 will be released this year are unfounded, a report by Kotaku today asserts.

Kotaku’s contacts, both first- and third-party have denied access to PS5 dev kits. Moreover, two sources say the PlayStation 5 is likely to be released in 2020 rather than later this year.

On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward,” one source said. “At some point, Sony’s probably looked at every possible date. It’s all about what they think is the best sweet spot in terms of hardware.”

While no sources said they were in possession of a PS5 dev kit, PS4 dev kits were first released to developers between 18-24 months of the console’s release. Even if PS5 dev kits were out in the wild, that will tracks for a PS5 release in 2020.

The PS4 was released back in 2013, with the PS4 Pro released in 2016. The PS4 was released seven years after the PS3. Considering it’s been less than five years between the PS4 and the theoretical PS5, do you think we’ll actually see it this year?
