Removal of Battlefront 2 microtransactions won’t impact EA, says publisher

The (temporary) removal of microtransactions from Star Wars Battlefront 2 won’t impact EA’s fiscal year 2018, the publisher recently stated.

Posting a securities filing over the weekend, EA said it expects no material impact on its fiscal year 2018 financial guidance over the removal of the in-game Crystal store.

“On November 16, 2017, Electronic Arts Inc. (“EA”) announced in a blog… that it will turn off all in-game purchases for the Star Wars Battlefront II title until further notice. This change is not expected to have a material impact on EA’s fiscal year 2018 financial guidance.”

In simpler terms, the statement says the removal of microtransactions won’t change the publishers projected earnings between now and 31 March 2018.

Its a pretty generic statement, so what EA truly means is up in the air. It’s unclear if EA means that it wasn’t expecting much income from microtransactions, or if they’re planning to reactivate them soon to maximise that additional income.

Right before the game’s global release last Friday, EA disabled in-game microtransactions, then issued a statement apologising for not living up to players’ standards. This means that EA Access players had close to three whole days to purchase said microtransactions and gain an unfair advantage over others.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
