Rockstar has released more details on just how popular Red Dead Redemption 2 is, following its record-breaking launch weekend.
During its first eight days on sales, Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped more than 17 million copies — that’s more than the still very successful original Red Dead Redemption shipped in eight years, Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive has announced.
Shipped refers to the number of copies delivered to retailers, not sold directly to the consumer, but it’s increasingly becoming the industry standard term — especially for console sales.
It’s an extremely impressive number in such a short timeframe. To put it into perspective — if we discount the very popular GTA V which has sold 95 million copies across all five platforms — the best-selling game on PS4 is currently Uncharted 4 with estimated sales of around 8.7 million over 2.5 years. The best-selling game on Xbox One is believed to be PUBG with approximately 8 million copies sold in 11 months. If we assume Red Dead Redemption 2’s units shipped are split roughly equally across both platforms, it will become the best-seller on both consoles soon enough*
*As we don’t gave complete software sales information for PS4 and Xbox One games, these are estimates.
