Project Leonardo is now the Access controller for the PS5

Yes!

Update: Sony’s Project Leonardo controller has been rechristened the Access controller for the PS5.

“We’re just getting started with our accessibility journey with PS5,” Sony accessibility lead Mark Friend said in a new video detailing the peripheral.

Pricing or availabilty of the Access controller is not yet known.

Original story [5 January 2023]: PlayStation today debuted Project Leonardo, an accessibility controller kit designed for PS5.

The kit was shown off during CES 2023 today, designed to “remove barriers to gaming and help players with disabilities play more easily, more comfortably, and for longer periods on PS5”.

Developed through conversations with organisations like AbleGamers, Stack Up and Special Effect, Sony calls the kit “a highly configurable controller that works in tandem with many third-party accessibility accessories and integrates with the PS5 console to open up new ways of gaming”.

The customisable kit will offer up customisable buttons, profiles and more.

Take a look at what to expect from Project Leonardo below.

“Project Leonardo is part of the PS5 product family and is based on the same design concept,” said designer So Morimoto. “We were inspired by the idea of all players enjoying the world of PlayStation together. Our team tested over a dozen designs with accessibility experts, looking for approaches that would help address key challenges to effective controller use. We finally settled on a ‘split controller’ design that allows near free-form left/right thumbstick repositionability, can be used without needing to be held, and features very flexible button and stick cap swapping.”
