Phil Spencer says Xbox mobile game store could launch in 2024

Time will tell.

Xbox head Phil Spencer has told The Financial Times that an Xbox mobile game store could come as soon as 2024.

“We want to be in a position to offer Xbox and content from both us and our third-party partners across any screen where somebody would want to play,” Spencer said.

“Today, we can’t do that on mobile devices but we want to build towards a world that we think will be coming where those devices are opened up.”

Microsoft has been working on an Xbox store for iOS and Android devices for some time now, and has plans to beef that up with its planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard (and specifically, Candy Crush‘s King).

Spencer also said the Xbox mobile game store is dependent on “The Digital Markets Act that’s coming — those are the kinds of things that we are planning for. I think it’s a huge opportunity.”

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) could require those that the European Union labels as “gatekeepers” to open devices up to competing app stores. Essentially, the DMA would let Microsoft once again directly sell titles on mobile devices without the requirement of hefty commissions back to Apple or Google.
