Blizzard appears to be teasing a new hero for Overwatch — and it looks to be a gorilla like Winston.
The Overwatch blog now sports a post by the fictional Atlas News, which reports on the “possible fate of [the] Horizon Lunar Colony”.
In the report, the equally fictional Lucheng Interstellar corporation shares transmissions between members of the colony, including Winston himself. The communications deal with the modifications that led to Winston gaining his intellect. They appear to have reacted differently, depending on the gorilla.
A number of different gorillas are mentioned in the communiques, including one named Hammond. That particular gorilla is missing by the end of the saga, alongside Winston himself.
“Is anyone else concerned that it’s been almost a week and no one’s seen Hammond? His cage has been empty for a week,” writes a scientist by the name of Zhang.
That same communique also suggests Hammond is a much smaller gorilla than Winston — so he probably won’t be a tank character.
“I guess it’s not a big deal to anyone else, but it would be good to have all our test specimens accounted for,” Zhang continues. “I don’t know why we ever thought it was a good idea to have smaller test subjects, I completely regret it.”
It’s also possible a lunar-themed event will coincide with Hammond’s introduction to the game. All this, of course, is speculation — we’ll have more as it becomes available.
Overwatch is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4. A special Anniversary event is currently running in-game.
