Overwatch renames McCree to Cole Cassidy

And with a cool in-game reason as well.

Overwatch will rename McCree to Cole Cassidy, Activision Blizzard today revealed.

The official name change comes on 26 October and will have in-game reasons that help to fill the character’s backstory.

“The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago,” a post on Twitter begins.

“Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become. But in every cowboy’s life, there comes a time when he has to stop and make a stand.

“To make this new Overwatch better — to make things right — he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at dawn.”

Blizzard announced it would be changing the name of the character back in August after its real-life namesake found himself embroiled in allegations of sexual harrassment. The real-life Jesse McCree was one of the Blizzard developers pictured in what was dubbed the “Cosby Suite” at BlizzCon 2013. McCree’s text chats also featured in a report about the hotel room and activities carried on in and around it. Activision Blizzard later confirmed that McCree has left the company in the wake of events.

Overwatch is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5 and Switch.
