Nintendo Switch kickstand is designed to detach so it doesn’t break

If you attempt to dock your Nintendo Switch with the kickstand deployed, chances are it’ll detach from the console. But relax! It turns out it’s meant to do that.

The Reddit post of the kickstand snapping off created some concern last week, but now that we’ve examined the component, it’s clearly an intentional feature.

The kickstand itself is really sturdy. Not wanting to break it, I was too gentle when I first tried to pull it out. It requires a little force; just enough to stop it opening and closing on its own. But that also means the dock isn’t strong enough to push it closed, and instead the pressure is forced upon the hinge if it’s left open.

When that happens, it clicks out just as it should, and then easily slots back into place. We wouldn’t recommend doing it often, eventually it will strain the plastic, but you’re not going to break anything if the kickstand comes flying off.
